Restarting! Some interesting titles to look at

I haven't posted for awhile, but since there is still interest, and I am still reading.....it feels good to restart and hope for growth.  For those who follow the podcast, I am hoping to also do some new episodes but they won't be likely to happen for a bit yet as I'm working out what I want it to be and the library is buying new equipment.

So.....here's to restarting!  I decided to start with some interesting reads over the last few months:

I have been a long-time fan of Hamilton's so when the 30th in the Anita Blake series came out, and it is FINALLY addressing the wedding....well, I was excited!   Slay is not what I thought it would be, but it was really well done, lots of action and suspense (Who is attacking us?  Why?  How do we protect the ones we love?)  After Anita and Jean-Claude became rulers it kind of cut down on the big tension, so having it back was nice....and also the character growth was so well done.  We have never met Anita's family but have always heard stories, so meeting them and seeing how Anita deals with the trauma, issues and worries was quite cathartic.  For anyone coming from a conservative family, coming out is always difficult....coming out as a Wiccan/polyamorous/bisexual?  Enough to stress anyone out!  I will admit to being a bit disappointed that the wedding hasn't happened yet, but hey...we're getting closer!

I thought this novel brought back some of the old tension but retained the humanity and growth we've witnessed in the characters...really showing how that growth helps and changes the way Anita and the gang handle enemies and aggressors.  Can't wait for the next one!

I did not expect to love this book, and indeed began reading it with skepticism.....but Chambers has written a cozy, sweet story with a lot of depth that truly deserves all the good press it has gotten.
The premise of the story is that a monk (he wanders, giving tea and a sympathetic ear to all who need him) goes in a different direction, off the established path and finds a robot.  No one has seen a robot since they all declared self-determination and freedom from humanity (at least several hundred years) but this robot is also wandering and wondering how humans are doing.  The interactions and conversations with the two of them are the heart of the story....which sounds dull but totally isn't.  I really love this story and highly recommend you trying it!

This manga series is SO fun!  Essentially Kanako leaves a terrible job and in looking for a better job (or at least one without a creepy boss) she stumbles into the world of assassins for hire.....and turns out that her propensity for disappearing into the woodwork is a bonus ability for an assassin.  The Mary Sue nature of Kanako's adoption of the assassin life is part of the comedy, and is one of the few times where it works perfectly.  After all, who expects a mild mannered girl of quiet temperment to be good at killing....or to enjoy it?   So, if you're looking for something fun, and different, I highly recommend trying this one!

This story started as a short story in a collection but is being turned into a series.  Cody published it alone and is planning sequels in the near future.  This is a fun MM shifter story featuring crows and a human pulled into their orbit.  Amos is a college student who starts feeding the crows as a proactive self-defense maneuver, as he read that they can remember those who are mean to them and he wants them to like him (and not poop on him).  What he doesn't know is the crow shifters are a thing, or that the King of Crows is the professor he is crushing on.  As this is a short story, the whole thing goes pretty quickly, but is still interesting and fun (and who doesn't love a short story?).
